Review and Giveaway: Eco Sprout Detergent

"Eco Sprout detergent is an environmentally friendly, all natural detergent that's great for your entire family. It is SAFE for cloth diapers and sensitive skin. Our detergent is free from dyes, brighteners, enzymes, phosphates and is 100% biodegradable. Finally, a clean you can trust!"

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to try out Eco Sprout detergent. Eco Sprout sent me several samples of their detergent and I immediately washed a load of cloth diapers when the samples arrived. I'm not sure why, but I get really excited about trying new detergents!

I was pleased with the scents I tried (Lavender Chamomile and Fresh Linen) because they are mild, which is great for people that don't like overwhelming fragrance on their laundry. Or if you are looking for an unscented detergent, Eco Sprout's In the Buff detergent is a perfect option. Of the three types I tried, I'm happy to report that none of the detergents irritated Jacob's eczema!

I also like that  Eco Sprout is effective in removing odors and stains from the diapers. This is a must for me because I hate lingering odor. Another thing I noticed is the detergent did not leave any buildup behind. A few times I've washed diapers in other detergents and they have seemed crunchy rather than soft afterward, even with an extra rinse. However, Eco Sprout left his diapers soft and clean! Eco Sprout detergent is not just for cloth diapers though, I washed a load of clothes and they were pleasantly fresh and clean afterward as well.

Buy It: Eco Sprout is available online at ecosproutsoap.com and a few retailers.

Win It: One reader will win a sample pack of 5 scents of Eco Sprout detergent. To enter, tell me which scent you would like to try most.

I've been interested in freezer cooking for some time now, so I finally made the decision to invest in a chest freezer for our garage. Since I'm a newbie, I don't know where to start. Do any readers have advice? Recipe suggestions? Do I need a vacuum sealer, if so what do you recommend? I'd love to get some meals ready to go before the baby arrives in about 10 weeks. Thank you in advance for the help!

Pinecone Research is accepting new members!

From time to time Pinecone Research accepts new survey panelists, and I just received an email that they have more openings! This is one of my favorite sites because each survey is about 15-20 minutes long, pays $3 via Paypal or check within a week, and I often receive sample products to test along with the survey. If you are interested in signing up, do it right away because space is probably limited and they may be  looking for specific demographics.

    Cloth Diapering: A year later

I had every intention of posting this on the 16th of last month when Jacob turned 16 months old because that would have marked the year point from when we started cloth diapering full-time.... but my husband came home from Afghanistan for a couple weeks... and life got in the way :) So instead, this is a 13-month update on cloth diapering in the Murphy household.

    Awww memories...

We currently have the following diapers:
    10 - bumGenius 3.0
14 Bummis prefolds, and 3 covers (I had the Bummis Organic Cotton Diaper Kit but gave a few things to a friend)
2 GroVia All in One Diaper
    2 Fuzzibunz One Size Diaper
2 My Baby's Green cloth diaper
2 Bottombumpers Side Snapping All-in-One Diapers
2 Babee Greens organic cotton diapers
1 Sage One Step Diaper Coversand 2 Diaperaps Infant with umbilical cut-out covers
    1 Smartipants diaper
    1 Katydid one-size pocket diaper
    1 Babee Greens hemp diaper
    1 handmade diaper from Etsy

This is our cloth diapering station

    My favorite diapers:
    Best all-around: bumGenius 3.0
2nd place: Fuzzibunz One Size Diaper
3rd place: GroVia All in One Diaper (I love them but they shrank so now they are a little on the small side)
Most absorbent combination: Babee Greens hemp diaper with a Bummis diaper cover (great for long naps and overnight)

    Laundry time:
    1. Secret weapon: Bi-O-Kleen Bac-Out Stain & Odor Eliminator - Bac-Out is wonderful for spot treating stains and odors, I don't know how I ever survived before
    2. Major time-saver and removes a significant part of the yuck-factor: biodegradable diaper liners
    3. Necessities: large wet bag or a soak bucket
    4. Detergents: We've tried Crunchy Clean, Eco Sprout, and Rockin Green (Alice.com has great prices on Rockin Green), all of which work well in removing stains, odors, and buildup.
    5. Stripping: I didn't know that I needed to strip my diapers until a few months ago, now I do it every time I notice that the diapers are getting less absorbent. For information on stripping, check out this link.
    6. When do we make exceptions?
If we are traveling I don't cloth diaper, usually I'm not sure when or where I will be able to wash the diapers, and I don't have room in our suitcase. During trips I use either a biodegradable diaper like Broody Chick 100% Natural Fully Compostable Diapers now available from Amazon (but expensive) or a more affordable disposable option (check out the Subscribe &Save deal on Amazon) like Seventh Generation diapers. The thing I also love about getting my diapers on Amazon, is I can order in advance and send diapers to a family member's house and that's one less thing I have to worry about or pack!

    What's next for us?
    1. Cloth diapering two babies at once. I've already started building up a little extra in our diaper stash for Elliot. A few things I'm going to try are the Babee Greens organic cotton diapers, Econobum diapers, and the Sage diaperaps covers.
    2. Try cloth wipes.
    3. Adding more boosters to Jacob's diapers because he is a heavy wetter and using the couple hemp boosters I have seems to make a world of difference in preventing leaks. This week I also ordered Thirsties Hemp Inserts and Kissaluvs Cotton Fleece Super Soaker Doublers to try out.

Simple Saturday: Lots of goodies in the mail!

I love when my mailbox is full! Here's what came today:

    Free Magazines
    Free foundation sample from Covergirl
Free Kiehl's lotion from a L'Oreal survey panel - I found out about this opportunity on another survey website because of a screening survey I completed). This is why I say those 5 minute surveys often lead to bigger projects and freebies!
My order from Organic Beauty Now purchased with a Mamapedia voucher I got free- $10.95 shipped after voucher (savings of $40!) the order also had a few free samples in it

    Getting closer!

    Upcoming Review: Way Basics

Recently, I heard about Way Basics, a company that offers some great eco-friendly storage products, and contacted them about reviewing a product. I selected a couple storage cubes for Jacob's room and they are on the way as I write this. Check back in a few weeks for photos and my thoughts!

In addition to storage cubes, Way Basics also offers a variety bookcases. The best part is Way Basics products are made from zBoards which are  formaldehyde and VOC- free, and composed of 99% post-consumer recycled paper. They are also easy to assemble! Read more here.

Way Basics offered a discount code for me to share with my readers, and because it expires on 3/11/11, I thought I would share it right away! To save 10% off everything on their site, enter code: WBCAC10 when you check out.

Disclosure: I was provided a discount code to purchase a product in exchange for writing a review.
