The Dirty Dozen: Foods to Eat Organic

 Photo Credit: The Daily Green

The Daily Green posted a list of foods to eat organic, as well as 15 foods that you don't have to eat organic.

Buying organic for foods that have the highest risk pesticide residue, and not buying organic for foods that have a low risk is a great way to save money. You don't have to buy everything organic, but some foods are definitely worth it!

Trying to be an ethical meat eater

A few years ago I decided to be a pescetarian (vegetarian diet + fish) and I was for nearly 18 months... then I met my husband. My husband likes to eat meat, and when we'd go out to dinner I slowly started craving it again. One day I decided I wanted a hamburger, and then later that day pepperoni pizza, and it was all over...

Today I still eat meat, but I've decided I'm going to be an ethical carnivore. I've started buying only organic chicken and grass-fed beef. I recently stumbled across a farm in Tennessee that offers 100% grass fed beef! I know it's worth the extra cost because it's better for my family (since we've chosen to eat meat) and it's better for the environment.

I don't advocate one type of diet over another, but I'm wondering if any of my readers also trying to eat meat organically and ethically? If so would you like to share any tips?

Review and Giveaway: eos

Although I couldn't find actual statistics on how much lip balm a person swallows in a given year, I'm sure it's probably more than we would expect. Considering that some amount of your favorite lip balm ends up in your stomach, it's worth rethinking which products we use. eos (Evolution of Smooth) makes natural and organic lip balms, lotions, and creams that you can feel safe using every day!

The eos organic lip balm - smooth sphere is 95% organic and 100% natural! I love eos lip balms for a bunch of reasons. The first reason, besides the natural ingredients, is that it leaves my lips soft and smooth all day without needing frequent applications. Second, the shape of the balms is unique and convenient. When I reach in my purse, I can quickly find my eos lip balm because nothing else in my bag has the unique sphere shape. Also, the lid twists off easily and I've been able to perfect my ability to open and apply it with only one hand. Third, I love the flavors! I've tried both the mint lip balm, which is cool and refreshing, and the honeysuckle honeydew lip balm, which is sweet! Finally, I love that eos lip balm spheres last for a long time, so you will save money using them!

eos also sent me a bottle of their Ultra Moisturizing Shave Cream in Cucumber Melon to try out. I immediately liked this product because they use a bottle made from at least 25% post-consumer recycled plastic! I prefer plastic bottles over metal because the metal containers tend to rust when I leave them in the shower, and it's nice that this plastic container has some green factor! Also, the bottle has grips on it making it easy to hold when wet. The ultra moisturizing shave cream is so moisturizing that it can be used to shave wet or dry. It's non-foaming and easily covers your skin with a nice lather. The best part is that the ultra moisturizing shave cream is free of parabens, animal by-products, and animal testing. I love how the aloe, oat, and shea butter kept my skin soft and hydrated after shaving!

Buy It: eos products are available in drug stores such as CVS, Walgreens, and Rite Aid, or can be purchased online. Please click here to locate a retailer near you.

Win It: One reader will win an eos organic lip balm sphere in mint and one in honeysuckle honeydew. To enter, please comment below with which eos product sounds the most appealing to you!

Want to raise your baby organic, vegan, or vegetarian?

My friend wrote up a great post this morning about raising your baby organic, vegan, or vegetarian. She's not advocating one over another, but provides some great resources so you can decide for yourself. Please check out her information here.

Review and Giveaway: Skin Free SkinCare

Skin Free products are Pharmacist formulated and doctor recommended for delicate, sensitive, and very dry or damaged skin. Every Skin Free product is all natural and vegan, perfume-free, petroleum free, free of harmful chemicals, steroid-free, colorant-free, free of animal cruelty and testing, and they won't leave your skin feeling greasy! Skin Free products are safe for extreme dry skin, skin or fragrance allergies, Psoriasis, Dermatitis, Eczema, pregnant Moms, babies, elderly, diabetics, Renal patients, and after Radiation or Chemotherapy.

A couple weeks ago, Skin Free Skincare asked me if I'd like to try their products and generously provided me with the Whipped Tamanu Body Butter and the Sweet & Smooth Sugar Scrub. The Skin Free Whipped Tamanu Body Butter contains Organic Extra Virgin Olive, Shea butter, and Tamanu oil, which was first discovered and used by the Polynesians. Tamanu oil has both anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, offering wonderful relief for sun-damaged skin, extremely dry skin, Eczema, and Psoriasis. It can also help reduce scarring! I asked my husband to let me test out the body butter on him, because although he has never officially been diagnosed with a skin condition, he has chronic dry skin in multiple places, including the insides of his elbows. He applied the Whipped Tamanu Body Butter for a couple days before noticing a significant improvement on his dry skin. The formerly red, itchy, and inflamed patches of skin are now smooth and free of redness. On myself, I noticed softer, more moisturized skin, and a few scratches on my arms healed quickly!

Instead of using salts to exfoliate your skin, the Skin Free Sweet & Smooth Sugar Scrub contains natural alpha hydroxy- acids which renew skin and leave it refreshed. This scrub is safe to use on facial skin and on any area of the body with rough spots, stretch marks, and dry skin. It can also be used for a manicure or pedicure to remove callus and rough cuticle skin. I opted not to share this product with my husband because an application of the Skin Free Sweet & Smooth Sugar Scrub followed by a soothing bath sounded like a wonderful way to pamper myself. I really love this sugar scrub and was pleased by the sweet aroma and by the natural glow it left behind! I highly recommend the sugar scrub for anyone else that could use a good pampering!

Buy It: Skin Free products are available at CVS, Walgreens, and Drugstore.com. To find a local retailer, please click here.

Win It: Just in time for Mother's Day, Skin Free is offering a Skin Renewal System (retail value $32), which contains the Whipped Tamanu Body Butter and the Sweet & Smooth Sugar Scrub, to one of my readers! To enter please visit Skin Free and comment below with another product you'd like to try or something you learned about Skin Free. (Please note that the winner may not receive their prize by May 9th)

13 by 30 Challenge: Week 2

Today marks the end of week 2 of my 13 by 30 Challenge! I trained mostly indoors this week because it's a struggle for me to want to wake early and go running after a night of feeding my baby every couple hours, and it gets hot later in the day. However, he seems to be sleeping through the night now, it's happened 3 times in the past week! I'm so excited, but afraid of jinxing it. It's crazy how some babies start sleeping through the night after a couple of months, and others, like my little guy, wait until after 7 months. Needless to say, I'm thankful for getting better sleep the past couple of nights!

Here's what my training looked like this week:

Tuesday - 4.75 miles on the elliptical (475 calories)
Thursday - no sleep = no exercise :(
Saturday - 4.8 miles on the elliptical (480 calories)
Sunday - 3.25 mile run and 1.25 mile walk (I'm guessing 450 calories burned)

Weight - 166 (1 pound lost since day 1 of training)

Review: Natural Balance Pet Food

Recently my friend Cricket posted an article on her blog about pet food and harmful ingredients. After reading the article I started to consider the foods I was serving my dogs and cats and wondered if in my family's "going green" journey, a couple family members had been left behind?

I spent some time researching brands of pet food and checking their ingredients, then concluded that Natural Balance was the brand I wanted to try. I've seen Natural Balance in pet stores for several years, yet hadn't given it much consideration. I guess I assumed that all of the "high quality" brands of pet foods contained healthy ingredients. Although, this assumption was far from the truth. After reading over Natural Balance's ingredients and customer testimonials, I could see the difference and wondered why I hadn't tried their dog or cat food yet.

Natural Balance Pet Foods was founded in 1989 with the mission of developing the finest and healthiest pet foods on the market. Natural Balance foods are scientifically based and feed not only pets, but also animals in zoos and reserves worldwide! Plus, even if your pet has specific dietary needs, Natural Balance has you covered with their allergy, vegetarian, and organic formulas. I love that every Natural Balance product is free of artificial preservatives, flavors, or bleached ingredients.

Natural Balance generously sent me a 5 lb. bag of the Ultra Premium Formula dog food and a 5 lb. bag of Ultra Premium Formula cat food to sample. I slowly mixed a little into what I was previously feeding my cats and dogs. After a couple days they had transitioned completely to Natural Balance and I'm happy to report that it seems as though they prefer Natural Balance. Thankfully, my pets are now eating healthy and natural meals, and I no longer have to worry about additives and animal by-products. Furthermore, I have noticed some improvement to my dog Orion's (pictured below) dry skin!

Review and Giveaway: Seventh Generation Natural Baby Starter Kit

I was first exposed to Seventh Generation products years ago when my mom began using the dish soap and laundry detergent. However, those weren’t products that I immediately carried with me when I set out on my own as an adult. It wasn’t until I learned that I was pregnant last spring that becoming more organic and eco-friendly became a huge priority. I used some natural products before, recycled all of my bottles and cans, and did my best my best to bring reusable shopping bags to the store. Yet, it was the opportunity of a fresh start in the new life inside of me that really made the “green” light bulb go on in my head. My family first started using Seventh Generation dish soap, once my son was born we tried the diapers and baby wipes, and then all-purpose cleaner. Now I've tried almost every product Seventh Generation offers!

Why am I sold on Seventh Generation products? I love how Seventh Generation gives me peace of mind. When I wash my baby’s bottles in the Free & Clear dish soap I don’t worry about him ingesting harmful chemicals. After I clean with the all-purpose cleaner, I don’t worry about us breathing in toxins. And when my baby is squirming around the house in a Seventh Generation disposable diaper I don’t worry about bleach and chemicals soaking into his skin.

I get more than peace of mind from using Seventh Generation though, I also get a variety of products that perform better than their non-organic competitors, and at reasonable prices. I’m thankful that in my quest to go green I haven’t sacrificed performance or my budget.

Seventh Generation generously provided me with a Natural Baby Starter Kit to review upon my request. The Natural Baby Starter Kit includes everything pictures above, here are my thoughts on each product:

Chlorine-free Diapers - I've been using Seventh Generation diapers on my son since October. I predominately cloth diaper, however I like to keep disposables on hand for traveling and running errands. I love that these diapers are chlorine-free! On top of that, they are soft, absorbent, leak-free, fit great, and are affordable (there are frequently coupons on the Seventh Generation website or you can get a great price on Amazon or Diapers.com)
Baby Wipes - I really like the Seventh Generation baby wipes! They are unscented, mild, and gentle on my baby's skin. Plus the refill packs fit great in a diaper bag!
Paper Towels - I try to mainly use cloths or sponges when cleaning, because they are reusable, yet for some jobs I want a paper towel. For these jobs, the Seventh Generation paper towels are perfect! I was surprised by how durable and absorbent they are. I will be keeping a roll on hand at all times!
Disinfecting Wipes - The lemongrass fragrance is a little strong for me, yet I like how easy the wipes are dispensed from the container. The Seventh Generation disinfecting wipes kill the Influenza A virus, so next time we have sick germs in our house, I will be cleaning all the faucets and door handles with these wipes! I also like that they work great for cleaning up a quick spill and for typical cleaning jobs like wiping off kitchen counters. The possibilities are endless with this product!
Natural All Purpose Cleaner (Free & Clear scent) -  This is by far one of my favorite Seventh Generation products! I can use it in every room of the house and I appreciate that it is free of dyes and fragrances. I feel completely safe using this cleaner around my son and it can handle every job I need it for.
Disinfecting Multi-Surface Cleaner - This Seventh Generation product is another great all around cleaner, and it's beneficial to have around because of the disinfecting and virus killing qualities! I noticed that on the bottle it states that this cleaner is able to cut grease in addition to cleaning and disinfecting. I put it to the test on a few difficult food buildups on counters and my son's high chair. Dried baby food and oatmeal came right off the high chair!
Disinfecting Bathroom Cleaner - Again, not a huge fan of the lemongrass scent (but I'm picky), however I really like how this product performs! The cleaner comes out of the bottle in a foam spray that is not messy and it's easy to wipe up. In addition to cleaning counters and the shower, I used it as a toilet bowl cleaner to see if it could take care of the mess that cleaning out my son's cloth diapers leaves behind. It transformed the toilet to sparkling and smelling fresh!
Baby Detergent - Now that my son is eating solid foods, we get all kinds of fun stains in his clothes from peas, squash, carrots, bananas, etc. The Seventh Generation baby detergent gets all the stains out effectively and leaves the clothes feeling fresh and clean without having any dyes or perfumes!
Reusable Bag - I love having plenty of reusable bags around, this one is sturdy and a great size for grocery shopping!

I'm happy with everything I tested from Seventh Generation and I especially feel like the disinfecting products will give us extra protection next flu season or from any virus or germ that comes along!

@EarthsBest You Rock!

Photobucket

I mention Earth's Best products from time to time because I LOVE them! When I'm not making my son's baby food, I serve him Earth's Best organic foods. Jacob can taste the difference from other baby foods and he refuses oatmeal unless it's Earth's Best. I also love their diapers and shampoo & body wash!

A couple weeks ago I left a comment on the Earth's Best website to let them know how I feel about their products and today I was flipping through my mail and discovered a thank you letter full of coupons! I think it's great when not only does a company make awesome high quality products but when they also have awesome customer service and reward their faithful customers. Thank you Earth's Best, you made my day!

Target has an INCREDIBLE deal on Weleda Skin Food this week! It is on sale for $8.99 (reg $17.49) and you can use these two coupons to make it $2.99 (one is a target coupon and the other is a manufacturer's coupon):

I was at Target yesterday to get my free reusable bag and picked up a tube of Skin Food but I was missing one of the coupons so it was $5.99 for me, which is still a good deal :)

*CLOSED* Review and Giveaway: EcoBabyBuys.com

One of the latest trends in shopping is "one deal a day" sales. Often this means you can get great items at half the regular retail price or more! I love deals so I'm naturally drawn to these sales, yet when I was looking for green and eco-friendly products this way, I had no luck. Then I discovered EcoBabyBuys.com!

EcoBabyBuys.com offers one deal a day on eco-friendly items for babies and children for at least 40% off regular retail prices. Deals "go green" at 9 am EST and you have to be quick because they are on a first come, first serve basis.

The founders of EcoBabyBuys have set out on a mission to discover manufacturers that offer non-toxic, eco-friendly and fairly traded products for babies and children.

Before buying a product I research it and see whether it's truly green or not. Yet, if I'm buying from EcoBabyBuys.com, they save me the time and energy by ensuring every product they sell meets a strict criteria:
·    the use of non-toxic materials and dyes;
·    the use of organic and/or recycled textiles and materials;
·    the use of eco-friendly packaging;
·    and a commitment and adherence to the standards of fair-trade.

I love how EcoBabyBuys is passionate about providing the best and safest possible products on the market to their customers! The founders believe it is possible to raise one’s children without the fear of toxic products. To help parents out even more, they are working on a blog (also found at www.ecobabybuys.com) where they will write about topics relating to living an eco-friendly lifestyle, and they will welcome a dialogue with their customers and the larger web-community.

Are you ready for an extra bonus? EcoBabyBuys.com encourages you to share the deals with your friends by offering you a little reward! When you tell your friends about EcoBabyBuys.com using the easy share form on the website and your friend makes their first purchase, you will receive a $10 e-gift certificate to spend on future EcoBabyBuys purchases.

I was impressed with the mission of EcoBabyBuys, the products they offer, and the prices, so I contacted them about partnering with my blog. EcoBabyBuys generously sent me a few products to review and offered an awesome giveaway prize for my blog birthday celebration!

For review, I received a set of organic cotton baby socks from Kee-Ka and a lunch bag from Mimi the Sardine, shown above.

I love the Kee-Ka socks because they are 100% organic cotton, and this also means they are very soft! I have difficulty keeping socks on my baby's feet because he either squirms out of them or pulls the socks off. However, he doesn't mind having the Kee-Ka socks on and they don't slip off easily! The band at the top of the sock is thicker than the rest of the material which helps keep them on your little one's feet.

I tested the lunch bag out on a picnic and it was the perfect size for my lunch! I love how the fabric is water resistant and PVC-free coated cotton that is easy to clean off. Plus the print is fun and it will be perfect to send with my son when he starts preschool.

Buy It: EcoBabyBuys.com offers one deal a day, the products I reviewed will most likely be available again soon, when you sign up for the daily deal alerts by email you will find out first what's for sale on EcoBabyBuys!

Win It: One reader will win a Mimi the Sardine Shopper (retail value $46) provided by EcoBabyBuys.com. This bag has a water resistant, PVC-free coated cotton print on the outside, black lining that wipes clean, an inside zippered pocket and padded handles. To enter go here to sign up for the daily email alerts, then comment below letting me know you've completed the mandatory entry.
