Creative Project: Homemade Bath Fizzies

Enjoy a relaxing bath with these soothing bath fizzies!

Things You'll Need:
  • 1 cups baking soda
  • 1/4 cup Epsom salt*
  • 1/2 cup citric acid*
  • 1 tsp. essential oil* (optional)… I used tangerine essential oil
  • 1 tbsp. oil (jojoba* works well)
  • Witch hazel*
  • Mist sprayer
  • Large bowl
  • Muffin tin or other mold… I used a silicon ice cube tray from Ikea
  • Parchment paper
(*Note: these items can be found at most health food stores)
Step 1: Combine baking soda and Epsom salt in a large mixing bowl.
Step 2: Add essential oil and liquid oil to the baking soda and Epsom salt mixture. Mix it well, making sure that no lumps are present.
Step 3: Add the citric acid to your mixture and combine it thoroughly with your hands. The mixture should start to form and hold its shape when you squeeze it.
Step 4: Lightly mist the mixture with witch hazel. Don’t add too much or it will activate the baking soda and Epsom salt combination.
Step 4: Press the mixture into your mold. Make sure you are packing it tight enough in the mold that it will hold its shape.
Step 5: Carefully flip your fizzies onto the parchment paper. If it falls apart, try re-packing it into the mold and misting it with more witch hazel, if needed.
Step 6: Allow your fizzies to dry completely, at least 24 hours.

Green and Frugal Tip: What can you unplug?

Even when a charger isn't hooked up to a device, it's still draining energy! "According to Future Forests, only 5% of the power drawn by cell phone chargers are actually used to charge phones. The other 95% is wasted when you leave it plugged into the wall, but not into your phone!" So what can you do? Unplug anything not being used, or switch it over to a power strip, so you can turn the strip off rather than manually unplugging. Leaving chargers plugged in wastes your money and adds to the pollution created by burning fossil fuels.

Cash for Clunkers: The Appliance Version (Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Programs)

The government is getting ready to roll out a new version of "Cash for Clunkers." This time, the focus is on energy efficient appliances for your home. Each participating state has been approved with a pre-determined budget. Once the budget is capped, the program will be over in that state.

The idea is that when you replace an appliance listed for your state with an approved energy efficient version, you can apply for and receive a rebate (the amount will vary depending on what state you live in and what you buy).

You can head over to the US Department of Energy's site, find your state, and browse the list of Approved Energy Efficient Rebate Programs.

Green and Frugal Tip: Ditch the Plastic Bag

Photobucket

Ditching plastic is something I'm passionate about because I've seen where plastic bags end up. We've all had one fly by us when we are driving or seen one laying around in a parking lot. However, when I was living in Southern California I often saw them in places where they did a lot of harm. As a volunteer with Surfrider and the Bolsa Chica Wetlands, I picked up numerous plastic bags along the beach or caught in bird nesting areas. When I was surfing or kayaking I frequently came across bags in the ocean and it really made me mad! Animals get caught in bags or mistake them for food! They don't belong where they often end up, and plastic takes many years to decompose in nature (as much as 1,000 years!). So what can you do about it? Ditch the plastic bag! It's not hard to do, almost every store offers there own reusable bags now and there are TONS of cute ones on Amazon.

Plus, using reusable bags is one of the tips I mentioned on my list of ways to make buying organic more affordable. Some stores give you a credit of around $.05 a bag when you bring your own reusable bags to the store. So that's about $2.60 per bag for the year. I usually need about 7 bags or more for groceries, so total savings could be more than $18 a year for weekly grocery shopping trips, add other stores in there like Target and you've saved even more! So maybe $18-$25 a year isn't that much, but it's money you didn't have before, and you are using one less bag that you end up in the ocean or a landfill.

    Green and Frugal Tip: Borax

Borax is a great natural cleaner! Ashley from Crunchy Clean, recommended it to me as a laundry booster to help get tough stains out of my husband's Army uniforms. When I picked up a box at Kroger (4lbs for  $3.89), I was excited to see all of the other cleaning suggestions on the box!

It can be used for just about anything! Here are a few of the ways borax can help you clean:

    1) Laundry - Add 1/2 cup to a full load along with your detergent to remove stains and freshen clothes. Or use 1/2 cup as a pre-soak 30 minutes before washing the load. Borax can be used to soak cloth diapers!
    2) Dishes - Sprinkle a little on your pots and pans, then rub with a damp cloth. Borax is non-abrasive!
    3) Carpets - If you have a spill, sprinkle borax on the entire area and let it dry, then vacuum it up. If you have a dry stain, dissolve 1/2 up of borax in a pint of water, sponge it on the stain and then vacuum after it dries.
    4) Garbage Disposals - Sprinkle 2-3 tablespoons down the drain, let it stand for 15 minutes, then wash it down with water for a few seconds while running the garbage disposal. This will clean and neutralize odors.
    5) Mattress Odors or Pet Stains - Dampen the stain and sprinkle it with borax, rub it in and allow the borax to dry, then brush or vacuum it off.

Guest Review: Sweet Cheeks Diaper Salve

Last month I won Sweet Cheeks Diaper Salve from a giveaway and I passed it along to a friend, who decided to post a review of the product and I'm sharing it with my readers in case you are in the market for a natural diaper rash solution:

Sweet Check Diaper Salve review from Cricket's Daily Fix:

I was recently given a diaper salve by a friend called Sweet Cheeks! My little boy used to suffer from diaper rash that would come out of nowhere and go from a slight irritation to a worrisome red! I had tried a few diaper rash ointments, the main brands sold in stores and they didn’t seem to make a difference. I recently started seeking out finding things that will better my child and our lives, and jumped on the organic/environmentally friendly wagon! This diaper salve is all natural, and I have to say the ingredients list makes me happy. I find it reassuring when a product isn’t filled with harsh chemicals, some of which I have never even heard of.

Ingredients: Extra virgin olive oil, beeswax, essential oil of lavender and tea tree

I was honestly skeptical that this 1.5 oz tin of what looked like a big lip balm might not work. Wow do I owe Sweet Cheeks major credit! I used this on my little guy's bottom at the first sight of rash and have not had one single case of diaper rash since. Not only that, my son has a bit of a double chin and if we’re out and about and he happens to sweat, the skin under his cute little chin sometimes gets chaffed. I used Sweet Cheeks on that as well and have never had issues with that since either! I’m honestly extremely excited about this product and I tell anyone I know to use it. I have never used any diaper salve or ointment that has come close to working this well before!

You can find Sweet Cheeks Diaper Salve at SproutingUp.com

    GoodGuide.com: Directory of Green Products

The unfortunate truth is that some products that slap an "organic" label on the packaging aren't really that green. For example, a company may cut corners during the manufacturing process or leave trace amounts of harmful chemicals in the final product. Yet, some companies are very green in their ingredients, manufacturing, packaging, and sustainable practices in everyday operations. So are you wondering how that organic, green, and eco-friendly product you are using really sizes up?

I recommend looking it up on GoodGuide.com! This website is an incredible resource that will tell you not only about the product and potentially harmful ingredients, but also about the company's practices and community involvement.  Plus you can read the news about product recalls and new studies.
