In my quest to buy better, healthier, and local food I came across Gourmet Pasture Beef, a farm just down the road from me in Springfield, TN. The Gourmet Pasture Beef farm is owned and operated by the Gunn family. Prior to starting up their farm on 1,200 acres of lush land that had been in their family over 100 years, Josh and Kathy Gunn worked in corporate America in Atlanta, Georgia. They decided to make the big move in 2003 when they learned that their first child was on the way and their priorities shifted. Since then, the Gunns realized that this is one of the best decisions they've ever made!
Gourmet Pasture Beef now delivers grass-fed beef to restaurants and homes in the middle Tennessee area, and offers a large selection of meats for purchase online. According to Jo Robinson, grass-fed expert and founder of eatwild.com, Gourmet Pasture Beef is “among the best we had ever tasted, whether grass-fed or grain-fed. The flavor was rich and beefy and the steaks were very tender. I’ve tasted grass-fed beef from perhaps 50 pasture-based ranches around the country and there was none that was better than yours. Your steaks were also as well-marbled as any I’ve seen.”
Gourmet Pasture Beef raises only grass-finished cattle, which means that their animals spend their lives enjoying grass/forages until they are large enough to “finish”, 900-1000 lbs. Then they spend an additional 60-90 days finishing them on the highest quality forages/hays to fully develop the marbling fat that provides the exceptional taste. Each cut is hand butchered in a local USDA facility where it is dry-aged for a minimum of 14 days to ensure you receive home raised quality in every bite! You can treat yourself to a naturally juicy, fork tender steak or make memorable dishes with premium ground beef and roasts conveniently delivered to your door.
Meat, eggs, and dairy products from pastured animals are ideal for your health. Compared with commercial products, they offer you more "good" fats, and fewer "bad" fats. They are richer in antioxidants; including vitamins E, beta-carotene, and vitamin C. Furthermore, they do not contain traces of added hormones, antibiotics or other drugs.
Meat from grass-fed cattle is lower in total fat. If the meat is very lean, it can have one third as much fat as a similar cut from a grain-fed animal. Because meat from grass-fed animals is lower in fat than meat from grain-fed animals, it is also lower in calories. (Fat has 9 calories per gram, compared with only 4 calories for protein and carbohydrates. The greater the fat content, the greater the number of calories.) As an example, a 6-ounce steak from a grass-finished steer can have 100 fewer calories than a 6-ounce steak from a grain-fed steer.
Meat from grass-fed animals has two to four times more omega-3 fatty acids than meat from grain- fed animals. Omega-3s are called "good fats" because they play a vital role in every cell and system in your body. For example, of all the fats, they are the most heart-friendly. Another benefit of omega-3s is that they may reduce your risk of cancer.
What I think about Gourmet Pasture Beef:
After perusing their website and reading the benefits of grass-fed beef, I decided to place an order for ground beef and the Steak Lover's Package. The next day, Kathy Gunn arrived at my house with the order! I enjoyed talking with her very much, and appreciated how open and honest she was about their farm and how the animals are treated. Plus she even invited me out for a tour of the farm!
My husband and I grilled a NY Steak and a Sirloin steak first. We were impressed by the tenderness, rich flavor, and low fat content of each steak. I can easily say that it was the best steaks I've ever had!
This may sound odd, but in the past when I've cooked ground beef, the meat seemed to shrink because of the fat or water pumped into it. However, the Gourmet Pasture Beef ground beef doesn't shrink. One pound of grass-fed ground beef goes a lot further and it's juicy and flavorful. I've used it for burgers, tacos, and enchiladas, all of which were delicious!
Just a month after placing my first order (and before even finishing all of the steaks) we made the short drive to the Springfield, TN farmer's market to purchase more! This time we bought a rack of ribs to BBQ. The ribs were tender and had a lot of meat on them. It makes me happy that we can have incredibly good BBQ right at home!
Since I've made the decision to be an ethical meat eater, I'm thankful that I have high quality and great tasting grass-fed beef available so close to home!
